ASELER Launch Gives Refugees New Tools to Assert Rights

Since Asylum Access launched ASELER (Asesoría y Servicios Legales para Refugiados) in October 2007, ASELER has been providing advice and accompaniment to refugee families seeking safety, legal status, and human rights in Ecuador. ASELER staff also provide less-intensive individual consultations and group "Know Your Rights" trainings to help refugees understand the refugee status determination process.

Refugee status is a prerequisite to lawful employment and public education access in Ecuador. "ASELER's opening means hundreds of vulnerable refugees will now have information and assistance to navigate the refugee status determination system — the first step to rebuilding their lives," said ASELER director Michelle Arevalo-Carpenter.

"But this is only the beginning," she adds. "As ASELER grows, we want all of the hundreds of thousands refugees in Ecuador to have access to information and assistance on refugee status."
