Volunteer in the global south
Volunteering at an Asylum Access project in the global south is the experience of a lifetime. Our refugee law projects are staffed by volunteer U.S. lawyers and law students (and, occasionally, other highly-qualified individuals) who provide direct legal counsel, representation and advocacy under the supervision of a local project director. Asylum Access provides all volunteer legal advocates with an intensive training in international refugee law and refugee legal advocacy. Volunteers must cover their own expenses and commit to living and working in the global south for a period of three months or more.
Volunteer in the U.S.
Asylum Access's work is only possible with the help of our dedicated volunteers in the U.S. and other parts of the global north. Volunteers can help Asylum Access with on-line research, communications, community outreach, event planning, donor relationships, graphic design, one-time volunteer opportunities and much more. To volunteer, send a resume and an email describing your volunteering preferences to volunteer@asylumaccess.org.
Intern with Asylum Access
Internships are available in Policy, Communications and Development, as described below. All internships are unpaid, although Asylum Access will assist student interns in arranging for academic credit or work-study funding if available. Spring and Fall interns are asked to commit a minimum of 16 to 20 hours per week, although work hours and locations are flexible. Summer interns who can commit to 40 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks are preferred; all summer interns are asked to commit to at least 6 weeks of full-time work (40 hours per week) or 10 weeks of half-time work (20 hours per week).
Asylum Access, an innovative nonprofit dedicated to realizing refugee rights in the global south through legal services, policy advocacy and public education, seeks Communications Interns for Spring, Summer, and Fall 2007. The Communications Intern will be responsible for some or all of the following:
1) Media outreach: fostering media interest in the work of Asylum Access, including researching media sources, drafting press releases, conducting followup with reporters, and preparing Executive Director or Public Relations Chair for interviews.
2) Public education: Identifying and pursuing opportunities to educate the legal community and the general public about refugee rights and the importance of rights-based advocacy.
3) Publicity: Drafting text explaining Asylum Access's work to the general public, including text for website, brochures and handouts, press kits, and FAQs.
4) Major donors: Researching and communicating with potential donors.
5) Refugee profiles: Interviewing refugees and writing profiles of refugees assisted by Asylum Access or partner organizations.
The Communications Intern position is ideal for a strong writer with a commitment to sharing Asylum Access's revolutionary plan for refugee assistance. The intern must have excellent written and oral communication skills and possess vision and initiative.
To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and persuasive writing sample to Executive Director Emily E. Arnold-Fernandez at volunteer@asylumaccess.org.
Asylum Access, an innovative nonprofit dedicated to realizing refugee rights in the global south through legal services, policy advocacy and public education, seeks Development Interns for Spring, Summer and Fall 2007. The Development Intern will be responsible for some or all of the following:
1) Researching potential major donors.
2) Approaching potential major donors by email, phone, and in person.
3) Preparing development-related materials such as sponsorship forms, request letters, and publicity materials.
4) Researching potential foundation funders.
5) Researching and writing grant proposals.
6) Planning fundraising and friend-raising events, including securing locations and handling logistics, publicizing events, securing speakers and entertainment, and identifying invitees.
The Development Intern position is ideal for a strategic thinker interested in "growing" an innovative, effective nonprofit organization. The intern must be highly self-motivated, a "go-getter" with the ability to propose development plans and, upon staff or board approval, carry out implementation with minimal guidance. The intern must be comfortable asking people for money. Prior development experience preferred, but not required.
To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and a persuasive writing sample to Executive Director Emily E. Arnold-Fernandez at volunteer@asylumaccess.org.
Asylum Access, an innovative nonprofit dedicated to realizing refugee rights in the global south through legal services, policy advocacy and public education, seeks Policy Interns for Spring, Summer and Fall 2007. The Policy Intern will be responsible for some or all of the following:
1) Researching existing or incipient refugee legal aid efforts in the global south.
2) Analyzing opportunities for Asylum Access to support or initiate refugee legal aid in the global south.
3) Researching current issues in international refugee law and drafting opinion pieces for publication on Asylum Access's blog, legal or policy journals, or mainstream media.
4) Serving as Asylum Access's liaison with U.S. refugee rights organizations.
5) Researching and proposing positions on international and domestic refugee rights policy issues.
The Policy Intern must be highly self-motivated, a "go-getter" with the ability to propose appropriate policy positions and courses of action and, upon staff or board approval, carry out implementation with minimal guidance. Because the Policy Intern works closely with Asylum Access's Policy Director, based in Cairo, Egypt, she or he must be comfortable communicating over email and by phone as necessary.
To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample (ideally an analytical or opinion piece) to Executive Director Emily E. Arnold-Fernandez at volunteer@asylumaccess.org.
